Only half an hour away from the Kruger National Park's Orpen Gate at Hoedspruit, Zuleika Country House is located at the foot of the awesome mountain range of Limpopo's Blyde River Canyon, the largest green canyon in the world ! This 29000 hectare nature reserve abounding in wildlife (leopard, cheetah, rhino, giraffe, hippo, small antelope), features a 33 km gorge with spectacular precipitous cliffs rising up to 800 m from the riverbed. Zuleika's thatched buildings are discreetly tucked away between citrus and mango estates enhancing privacy and peacefulness And a sweeping terrace offers a uniquely romantic lookout onto the dramatic canyon cliffs of the Drakensberg. The complex is surrounded by a fascinating selection of indigenous bird-inhabited trees and bushes and a carefully balanced garden. Activities:
Fishing A whole range of outdoor activities is available to the visitor. There's the fishpond behind the garden with carp, bass and yellowfish.

Game Viewing 30 minutes drive to the Kruger National Park's Orpen Gate.

Bird Watching : Fish eagle and various colourful louries and humorous hornbills find their habitat in the shrubs and trees on the banks of the Blyde River that runs through the farm. Birdspotting expeditions with a local expert in the canyon's higher reaches can be organized. The Blyde River Reserve boasts over 200 bird species no less ! A path takes you to the river on the farm in only 7 minutes on foot

Hiking Trails hike down the canyon slopes to watch the cormorants and observe and hear the lake's vociferous hippo population, or go on a cruise.

Other Activities WHITE WATER RAFTING: One can go white water rafting on the tumultuous Blyde River. Or, reaching still higher for truly panoramic views-- how about a HOT AIR BALLOON expedition? Of course, there are numerous GAME DRIVES in the Kruger by day and night, you can go HORSE RIDING in the bush, or how about a game of GOLF at the Drakensig golf course?

Zuleika Country House is a brand new building, thatched with build-in beds and earth-coat floors, slate bathrooms in earthy tiles and wooden style towel rails. The colours are rich and dusky, smoked blue, sand yellow and terracotta red. The pool is an old farm dam that was expertly converted into a huge pool with sundeck next to a private thatched lapa. All rooms have air-conditioning. In the main building there is an exhibition hall displaying local art, as well as a curio/craft shop. An atmospheric bar opens out onto the terrace. Tourist attractions in the area.
Local attractions include the Swadini Reptile Park, Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre (their documentary about animal orphans has been shown regularly on the Discovery Channel), the Kapama Cheetah farm, and the White Lion breeding project. Those interested in the early days of the country's mining sector might enjoy a visit to Pilgrim's Rest. The viewpoints (Bourke's Luck Potholes, The Pinnacle, God's Window, Three Rondavels) allowing the visitor full appreciation of the stunning visual drama that the canyon and its lake afford, are within easy reach.

Agricultural sites of interest in the area.
There are opportunities to inspect and taste the local lemons, sensationally fibreless mango, litchis, papayas and guavas (when in season). OTHER INTERESTING ACTIVITIES: Black empowerment group farming; citrus and mango estates, mango drying factory, silkworm farm, monkey apple factory, packhouses, Blyde River pipeline irrigation farming: peppers, veggies, papino, guava, banana. Visit tea plantaions (1 hour) and sugar cane production in Malelane.
The Menu
How about a tranquil candle-lit dinner while the sinking sun sets about playfully changing their hue! The cooking ranges from traditional cooked breakfasts to local cuisine and a variety of ethnic dishes. Dietary and vegetarian requirements can be met easily. Zuleika is available for small functions and parties. And how about preparing, roasting and consuming your own favourite barbecue meal in the secluded lapa! Full English breakfast. Light lunches/cakes can be ordered in the tea garden. Three course dinners are served at R95 pp on the wooden deck overlooking the canyon.

Farm History: The farm was once used as a fish breeding project (bass) and then lemons. The heat (36% average in summer) proved to much for the bass but was ideal for the lemons.The farm produces lemons of exceptional quality that is exported all over the globe.

A bit about your hosts:
Altie and Lucas enjoy life on the farm and the beauty that surrounds them. Altie is an ex Woolworths store manager (Brooklyn) and teacher for mentally retarded children and has a daughter and a son. Her Partner Lucas, a Dutchman, works for Insight Travel in Eastern Europe for 5 months of the year and speaks 6 languages with a Masters degree in English literature.
