Only 30 km outside Graaff-Reinet on the farm Waterval, is the perfect stopover for the weary traveler: GRYSHUISIE and SCHOEMAN'S COTTAGE. Pet friendly!

GRYSHUISIE is a newly built structure that stands on the foundations of an old chicken coop and the farm style sense of it all is rife. The cottage can accommodate up to five guests.

Two bedrooms, spacious bathroom and a big living area with a kitchen (and a freezer) awaits guests with every visit. There is a TV with a DVD player, so please bring your collection along to make the cool nights feel shorter. A large lawn surrounds the house along with a nice outdoor braai area and patio. The view of the veld, the mountains and the sounds of the bleating goats and sheep can not be missed. The rippling stream is barely a few meters away, and those who are brave enough may even find cool refreshment in it.

On the other hand, SCHOEMAN'S COTTAGE was built around 1870 as the original homestead of the farm. This quaint little cottage with its thick stone and clay walls will keep you cool in summer and cosy in winter. The cottage has an en-suite bedroom, a living room and kitchen. It can accommodate up to four guests. The kitchen is fully equipped and there are outdoor braai facilities.

Come and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the tranquility that nature offers, without any interference, because there is no television or cell phone reception at this isolated getaway. Enjoy this fully furnished cottage and get to know its history, whilst you experience the fresh and vibrant Karoo environment.

The choice between staying in Schoeman's Cottage or in Gryshuisie is entirely yours. Come take a look for yourself what the Karoo can offer; because this is farm living at its very best.

Please note the owners cannot accept responsibility for the state of the public gravel road to the farm.

Remarks: GRYSHUISIE: (SLEEPS 5 - R700/NIGHT FOR COTTAGE)

Gryshuisie is a fully equipped self-catering unit with all the essentials for a relaxed holiday. There are two bedrooms and one bathroom and a large living area and kitchen. It offers complete peace and quiet, a big lawn and garden and buitebraai for up to five people to enjoy. The stoep offers amazing views of the old klipkraal, the river running close by as well as the mountainous surrounds. You cannot get more peaceful than this.
Gryshuisie offers no distractions from a busy life. If you want cell phone reception, you’ll find none here. No television will distract you from unwinding and sinking in all the tranquility farm living has to offer. The building was originally a chicken coup that was rebuilt to serve as part of a little school that used to be on the farm for the local children. In 2012 we started to renovate and rebuilt the old structure. Gryshuisie was eventually opened in December 2012 and since then played host to many satisfied families coming back again and again. On Waterval guests arrive as strangers, leave as friends, and return as a regulars.

SCHOEMANS COTTAGE ( SLEEPS 4 - R700/NIGHT FOR COTTAGE)

This quint house dates back to the earliest days of Graaff-Reinet district. It is the oldest house on the farm and was built around 1850. For decades it was the only habited building on the farm. In the years since the main house was built, it served several purposes, including storage, being used as a small shop as well as housing the generator that used to power the farm.
In 2007 it was decided to restore the house to its previous state and make it habitable once again. We tried to keep the spirit of the interior as close to the original house as we could, adding to the coziness of the cottage, especially in summer when it stays nice and cool even on hot days. The peaceful surroundings offers lovely mountain views, braai facilities and a farm pool to swim in during the hot summer months. The cottage is fully equipped for self-catering for up to four people. Schoeman’s Cottage is ideal for a refreshing overnight stop and as a relaxing base for a longer stay. If you bring enough food and drink, there’s actually no reason to ever leave.

WHAT GUESTS SAY:

"We spent 2 nights at Gryshuisie. The experience of being on the farm with no cellphone signal and no disturbances alone is worth the trip. The owners go out of their way to accommodate you, even going so far as to arrange items we left behind to be returned to us. Between the horse rides, goats, tame meerkats and swimming in the farm pool both children(8 and 13 years) were never bored. A true gem. We will definitely be returning time and again".

"We visited Gryshuisie for a 2 night stay mid-July. The hosts are very friendly. Lots to do on farm and lots to see, the staff are also very friendly and helpful. We did some horse riding, saw lots of animals and had a relaxing weekend, because we love outdoors and 4 x 4 rides, the 27 kilos on the "non tarred" road was no problem. People that do not love the out doors should not bother. This is for the people that loves a challenge, not for boring ghost souls!! Awesome weekend!"
