Farm Details
Farm Name/s:Langfontein Westbrook - 6000 ha
Farming Activities: Merino, Angus and Nguni Cattle, Disease Free buffalo, Sable and Roan Antelope
Farm History: Barend Jacobus Burgers, the father of Thomas Burgers, President of the SA Republic from 1872 - 1877, built the house on Langfontein with a wagon load of yellowwood from Knysna at a cost of 250 pounds in the late 1840's. Barend grew up on the farm Langfontein, described by his biographer Dr SP Engelbrecht as "die kroon van die Camdeboo -- hier kon die jong Thomas ‘n ryke sielelewe ontwikkel waaruit 'n verhewe idialisme gegroei het". The Luscombe family purchased the properties in 1937 and the current occupants James and Carina are the third generation owners. They have experienced what the young Thomas experienced growing up on the farm. Every visitor experiences for the duration of their stay a similar effect on their lives. The Khoisan name for the area is "The Camdeboo" meaning "Green Valley". This area consists of various farms in the mountains to the west of Graaff-Reinet of which Westbrook/Langfontein is known as the greenest amongst the green valleys. James and Carina were the first farmers in this area to start a guest farm activity, restoring the 1830 cottage across the road from Langfontein. Subsequently Westbrook House (former dwelling of Jame's grandparents) has been restored to its former glory.
