Nestled between the rural villages of Marken and Baltimore in the Northern Province Bushveld, the 16 000 hectare Shelanti big 5 Game Farm is merely a three-hour drive from Johannesburg and less than two hours' drive from Pietersburg.

Shelati Buffelsfontein self-catering Lodge is situated in the Big 5 Camp some 5 km from the Shelanti Main lodge. The lodge is electrically fenced and is surrounded by beautiful bushveld typical of this area. A drinking water hole in front of the camp offers relaxing and excellent game viewing.

Shelanti is indeed an ecological paradise for those who can appreciate and respect the African bush experience at its very best. At night, sharp-eyed visitors might encounter leopards, spotted and brown hyenas, aardwolves, black-backed jackals or even bat-eared foxes. Add to the mix the odd porcupine, aardvark, springhare, bush baby and numerous nocturnal birds, and you'll soon realise why so many visitors love the African - the Shelanti - nightlife.

Activities:

Game Viewing Game drives on open Landrovers are done on a daily basis. Special needs of our guests are considered when planning a game drive. Night drives are also quite popular and very invigorating in winter. Guided walks are done on request and can vary from thirty minutes to a few hours - depending on the needs and fitness of our guest. A qualified and armed guide and a tracker will accompany you and some secrets of the bush will be revealed to you while the rhythm of Africa takes hold of you. Where considered safe and feasible, tracking down rhino or elephant adds a primitive dimension and is guaranteed to get the adrenalines flowing.

If that is not enough, the antics of blue wildebeest, warthog or baboon can keep you occupied for a while. You will also encountered the fastest of African antelope, the tsessebe, white gemsbok, red hartebeest, graceful impala, zebra, steenbok, duiker, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer and ostrich adds to a rich menu of game to be enjoyed. A special project for breeding the endangered roan antelope can be visited by arrangement.

Bird Watching The feathered folk abound at Shelanti and the birding enthusiast can have a delightful time trying to identify as many as possible of our 260 plus species of birds. Included are the majestic martial eagle, the noble black eagle, the fish eagle or the odd bateleur. African hawk, Tawny, Wahlberg and brown and black breasted snake eagles by no means completes the list. Nocturnal birds of prey may be encountered during night drives. The very rare Kori bustard may be encountered while the stately secretary bird regularly patrols the open places for a juicy morsel. Water birds abound during the wet season and add another dimension to an already impressive number of birds. Enough specials occur to keep the discerning birding enthusiast happy.

Hiking Trails 4 x 4 ROUTES. The 4 X 4 trail covers between 60 and 100 kilometers depending on your length of stay and stamina. For the more experienced driver there are between four or five difficult sections depending on weather conditions

Other Activities Playing pool or lazing around the crystal clear swimming pool may just be what you need to round of an exhilarating day and getting some colour again. Shelanti hospitality has become a byword. Personal attention and truly sumptuous meals awaits you when you arrive back from your foray into the bush or after a doing-nothing time in the lounge. A bar that will help even the most thirsty to quench their thirst is right at your elbows. Sit around the outside fire listening to the language of lions or have a cosy winter evening around the fireplace inside the lapa listening to all sorts of tall tales.

The lodge comprises of a farmstead that has been transformed into a beautiful self-catering lodge with fully equipped kitchen, four bedrooms, dining room and lapa. No TV or radio, only fans and quests may use the swimming pool at the main lodge. The four bedrooms comprise two with double beds and two with two single beds each and own bathrooms. A rondavel offers three single beds with own bathroom.

Fauna and Flora. The unspoiled veldt consists of typical thorn bush, acidic grass pastures and sweet bush veldt. Fauna and Flora that has to be experienced the Shelanti way. With a new vista around every corner, our Game Rangers are qualified, helpful, and ready to assists the questions you may have. Shelanti's 11 000 hectares (27 500 acres) of mixed, malaria-free bush veldt has it's own Woody Big Ones. The productive Marula, the centuries-old lead wood, amazing knop thorn, white syringa, or the tamboti with mahogany, black monkey thorn, or the scarce sneeze wood also views for top spot. But don't forget the many species of Combretum together with the very obvious silver cluster leaf and may others lend great variety to a list of trees that numbers around one hundred. In season you can taste different fruits from the bush or just enjoy the surprising amount of flowers.

For the lover of butterflies, Shelanti caters in abundance. The orange tip and African monarch amazes you with their colours and aerial acrobatics, while many other species can be seen, of which a few are scarce. Insects will make the day (or night) of any entomologist and to watch the dung beetles sumo wrestling one another at a pile of dung, makes for fascinating watching
