It characterizes the stark beauty of this charming and unspoiled corner of the Highveld. Here you will find peace and tranquillity in the ‘Lake district of South Africa” with some 270 lakes in a 20 km radius.

The menu of attractions and activities on the farm and in the area is fascinating and include amongst others frogging safaris, birding, wild flower walks, bushman paintings, plaasdam swimming and sailing on the Chrissiesmeer and other lakes. It is only two hours drive from Jo-Burg (Oliver Thambo International) and certainly is the best 1st night stop in South Africa on your way to the Kruger and also the Ideal Stop-over between Kruger and KZN or The Berg.

Activities:
Fishing A new dam is being build on the farm for flyfishing for trout. No trout fishing in lakes – there is no river systems...only pans and lakes.

Bass and carp are the two species caught in the deeper pans in the area. The best spot is at Eiland Meer.

Bird Watching Mpumalanga's best kept secret is also southern Africa's largest natural freshwater lake district.

The pristine, sprawling wetland is home to 82 water birds and more than 100 other bird species, many of which are endemic to the region.

Rainfall and the level of the pans and lakes play a very important roll in birding in this area. The first waders arrive in September.

The best time for birding will be from September to March. Self-help Tours - your hosts will provide birding route maps. The route is a circular drive of 60 km, mainly gravel road. Best birding spots are marked on the map.

Other Activities Ané is a frogging and flower guide and offer frogging and flower safaris -- there are 9 different orchids on the farm

Things to come and see on the farm

• August is the month we sheer the sheep and it is always very interesting to experience
• October and November we plant grazing and maize for the sheep and cattle.
• March the sheep start to lamb
• November the cattle will get calves.
Come and enjoy a real Highveld farm.

Bring your own canoe, windsurfer, cat or any other rowing gear.

The rainfall and the level of the pans and lakes play a very important role in canoeing in the Lake District. Many of the more shallow pans dry up every winter if the summer rainfall wasn’t enough. The big lake, Lake Chrissie, is much deeper and the water level are much more stable. The lake is 1500 ha big and 5 m deep at the deepest point.

Permission to go on Lake Chrissie can be obtained from your host

Matotoland in Mpumalanga is home to the annual Chrissiesmeer Frog Festival, a rollicking good night chasing down ribbiting amphibians among the reeds. 'Matoto' is how Scottish settlers pronounced Maxoxo – the siSwati word for frog. Now Matotoland Region is home to the Frogging Festival.

The adventurous frog hunt begins at sunset. A sharp eye, keen ear and agility are key to the successful bagging of the sprightly amphibians.

From November to April in Matotoland in the highlands of Mpumalanga, the croaking, reeding, ribbitting calls of frogs looking for a mate can be close to deafening. One night of the year, their cries are less to do with courtship and more to do with outrage, as they are plucked from their reed or lily pad on the eve of the Chrissiesmeer Frog Festival.

Fortunately for the frogs, there is no ill intent in their capture, and after they are counted, measured and assessed by scientists from the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Cape Town, they are released back into the wild to continue their amorous songs.

The festival was started 10 years ago to celebrate the abundance of frogs in the area.

A bit about your hosts:
Nico and Ané started the farm on a shoestring in 1989. Ané’s background is that of a domestic science teacher. Being a very creative person, she comes up with new ideas every day. In 1990 Ané started to renovate the old sandstone farmhouse, without knowing that in 10 years time she would again make some changes to convert it into a guesthouse.

In 1997 Ané started the Matotoland Eco-tourism Association in Chrissiesmeer. She inspired many people in Chrissiesmeer to start tourism driven businesses, and along with her own guest house, she won the Mpumalanga Business Woman of the Year Award in 1999.

Nico is an industrial engineer who left the city life so that his family could grow up in the country. He is farmer and chopper pilot now and loves every minute of it!
