The family run Rietpan Guesthouse and Farm close to Koster and Lichtenburg in Northwest not only offers guests a special farmstay experience and private family ensuite accommodation in prizewinning landscaped gardens, but a variety of exciting activities and superb traditional South African cuisine. (Guests have their own restaurant, pub and lounge areas). Previously a cattle and maize farm, the 1400 hectare farm is now being transformed into a game farm and controlled bavaria with more than 20 game species such as kudu, waterbuck, eland, black springbuck, zebra and reindeer. (Ethical hunting available) Open vehicle guided game drives also include a visit to the Rietpan Caves on the farm – a fascinating experience. A narrow entrance leads one to a huge hall with stalagmites and stalactites and enough room for some 300 people. Other activities include flyfishing for bass, hunting safaris, horserides, hiking trails, rifle range for target shooting (rifles supplied), rock pool and visits to the site where the Battle of Rietpan took place. Rietpan’s Sports Bar and restaurant is also a popular meeting place for local farmers and the community and the adjacent shed has been beautifully transformed and decorated for weddings (including a draped chapel), conferences and parties for up to 400 people. Game Viewing Previously a cattle and maize farm, the 1400 hectare farm is now being transformed into a game farm and controlled bavaria with more than 20 game species such as kudu, waterbuck, eland, black springbuck, zebra, white blesbuck, ostrices, European bush pig, impala, duiker, reindeer and many others. Children just love the tame warthog, reindeer, monkeys and other animals in the garden at the guesthouse. Open vehicle guided game drives also include a visit to the Rietpan Caves on the farm (Ethical hunting available)

Bird Watching Rietpan’s impressive birding list includes 414 species. List provided.

Other Activities Other activities include flyfishing for bass, hunting safaris, horserides, rifle range for target shooting (rifles supplied), mountainbiking (Bring your own bikes), rock pool and visits to the site where the Battle of Rietpan took place. Rietpan also has a shooting range for target shooting and a variety of guns are available on the farm. Guests can also visit one of the largest Friesian Horse Studs in the area, Groot Marico with its Marico Eye (clear fountain used for scuba diving) and diamond digging.

Traditional farm food. Carefully prepared traditional South African dishes are distinctive of the cuisine. Great care is taken to accommodate any special dietary requirements. Various menu’s (up to four course) available. Rates include breakfast. Lunch available at R50 to R85 and dinner R50 to R85. Bar lunches also available

Farm History: The Battle of Rietpan took place on the farm in 1901. A certain IPA Liebenberg came across the caves in the early 1900’s and mined it for dolomite in the depression years (1930).
