Heidelberg was established when Heinrich Ueckermann bought part of the farm Langlaagte for 7 pound 10S and started a general dealer in 1861. The shop was situated where the main road between the then Port Natal (Durban) and Potchefstroom crossed the main road between the Cape and Pretoria. In 1865 he appointed TW Fannin as surveyor for a town development which he named his alma mater in Germany. Heidelberg developed as a typical rural Victorian town. Many buildings dating back to the period between 1890 and 1910 have been preserved.
